How to Plan Your Living Room Layout
Why Room Layout Matters
A well-planned living room layout creates comfortable conversation areas, proper traffic flow, and optimal TV viewing. Poor layout leads to cramped walkways, awkward furniture placement, and daily frustration. Our calculator takes the guesswork out of furniture sizing and placement.
The Three Golden Rules
- The 2/3 Rule: Your sofa should be approximately two-thirds the length of the wall it sits against for balanced proportions
- Coffee Table Distance: Position coffee table 40-50cm from sofa edge - close enough to reach, far enough for comfort
- Traffic Flow: Maintain minimum 80cm walkways for comfortable movement through the space
Room Size Categories
Small Rooms (Under 12m²)
2-seater sofas (140-180cm), wall-mounted TVs, compact coffee tables, minimal additional seating
Medium Rooms (12-20m²)
3-seater sofas (200-230cm), standard coffee tables, 1-2 accent chairs, side tables
Large Rooms (20m²+)
Large sofas or sectionals (240cm+), multiple seating areas, larger coffee tables, floating furniture possible
Common Layout Mistakes
- Pushing all furniture against walls (wastes space in larger rooms)
- Oversized sofas that block walkways
- Coffee tables too far from seating (can't reach)
- TV too large or too small for viewing distance
- Ignoring traffic flow patterns
- Forgetting to measure doorways before buying furniture
Visualization Before Buying
Never buy furniture without visualizing the layout first:
- Masking tape method: Use tape to mark furniture footprints on your floor - live with it for 2-3 days
- Cardboard mock-ups: Cut boxes to furniture dimensions and arrange in room
- Digital tools: Use room planners like RoomSketcher or IKEA Home Planner
- Measure access routes: Doorways, hallways, stairs - will furniture actually fit in?
