How to Choose the Right Sofa Size
The Two-Thirds Rule
A general guideline is that your sofa should be about two-thirds the length of the wall it's placed against. This creates a balanced look and ensures the sofa doesn't overwhelm or get lost in the space.
Room Size Considerations
- Small rooms (under 150 sq ft): Consider loveseats or apartment-sized sofas (58-72 inches)
- Medium rooms (150-250 sq ft): Standard sofas work well (72-84 inches)
- Large rooms (over 250 sq ft): Large sofas or sectionals (84+ inches)
Spacing Guidelines
- Coffee table distance: 14-18 inches from the sofa edge
- Walkway clearance: At least 30-36 inches for comfortable passage
- TV viewing distance: 1.5-2.5 times the TV diagonal for optimal viewing
- Wall clearance: Leave 6-12 inches behind the sofa if possible
Sofa Depth Matters Too
Standard sofa depth ranges from 30-40 inches (76-102cm). Deeper sofas are more comfortable for lounging but take up more room space. Consider how you'll use the sofa - formal sitting or casual relaxing - when choosing depth.
Before You Buy
- Measure doorways, hallways, and stairwells to ensure delivery is possible
- Use painter's tape on the floor to visualize the sofa footprint
- Consider the sofa's arm style - track arms save space vs rolled arms
- Account for reclining mechanisms if choosing a reclining sofa
- Think about future room changes and flexibility
